Newest Course at International Disc Golf Center

The Jim Warner Memorial Course, presented by Discraft, is the newest course open for play at the International Disc Golf Center. It features Discraft Chainstar targets and was designed by Hall of Famer, Jim Kenner, with assistance from Ron Russell and Pad Timmons. The initial equipment installation took place in November of 2008 and the course is open for play but improvements continue in preparation for the official grand opening at the Disc Golf Hall of Fame Classic on May 30-31, 2009. The course was sponsored by Dorothy Wentz, Priscilla Warner and the Atlanta Disc Golf Organization to honor the late disc golf promoter and PDGA member, Jim Warner.

Doss & Jenkins Win Green Country Open

From the PDGA website:

"Despite coming off an impressive pair of 51s from his Saturday rounds during the 2009 Green Country Open in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, Nate Doss knew his four-throw lead could be literally blown away in one-hole given the 30-50 mph winds that players faced during final round action at the Taylor Lodge facility. Josh Anthon, knowing that Sunday’s one round would be his only chance to close the gap from the second card, played a steady front nine on the Island Course before catching fire on the back. Anthon figured it would be his day after smashing chains and scoring an ace on the uphill hole 14, but a bogey four on hole 18 left Doss with just a par, par, par finish on 16, 17, and 18 to force a playoff. And Doss sort of knew it.
“I saw Josh kind of across the fairway, where on 14’s tee pad he gave me a tip of the hat, so I figured he was doing pretty good,” Doss said after the event. But it was the tip that Anthon provided on his lead drive during the playoff that really helped Doss his first National Tour event of the young 2009 PDGA season.
“I played the hole Saturday, and threw what I thought was a pretty good shot, and it held out right and landed, and I actually up pretty much right where Josh was [on his drive on the first playoff hole],” Doss said. “Now this morning I threw another shot that I thought was pretty good, and it held out right. So I just figured with this big crosswind to just hammer it inside. I aimed at the inside trees, and the wind just pushed it right around the trees and it hooked right up to the pin.”
That drive from Doss landed about 17 feet from the basket, forcing Anthon to do the only thing he could, knowing well that his friend from northern California was sure to make that putt, regardless of the conditions. Anthon’s birdie attempt flew by the basket and carried 24 feet away. The missed uphill third shot from Anthon left Doss to just layup and drop-in for the over $1000 first place check.
On the women’s side, Val Jenkins made it three-for-three on the 2009 National Tour by capturing this weekend’s Green Country Open title. Jenkins admits that she approaches the National Tour events differently than other tournaments.
“It’s just a different mind-frame when I’m going into these bigger tournaments. I know they are more important and more prestigious to win these events,” Jenkins said. “These are the events that add up to a title in the end, so I like to do very well in them.”
Jenkins did face strong challenges from Des Reading, who continued her outstanding play, as well as rising disc golf star Liz Lopez, who carded the low score in the women’s open division on Sunday on her way to capturing third place."

Disc 'n Dat Bluegrass Open

Time to start updating on the 2009 Bluegrass Open. This is the tenth year for the Bluegrass Open. Sometimes it seems like yesterday and others it seems like it's been twenty! But, thanks to my good buddy Ned Smethers, 10 years ago we replaced the Two Bit Open, td'd by Scott Erke and Brent Newport. Well, Ned deserted me and moved away, but I'm still here and with the help of a great group of friends and hard workers, we've been putting on a pretty damned good tournament now for these ten years.
It's an A-Tier/Supertour tournament that draws some of the PDGA's top players. Last year we had Valarie and Avery Jenkins here as well as other World Champions Rick Voakes, Peter Shive and a lot of top Pros. And the Ams have had a full field every year. Everybody wants a chance to show off their game at two of the best courses in the area, Lincoln Ridge (formerly Banklick Woods) and Idlewild. Lincoln Ridge is a 24 hole course with elevation changes, mostly wooded and a really well-kept course. You can score well here, but it doesn't always happen. Last year's champ, Avery Jenkins, could only muster a pair of 65's on the 24 hole course, while Disc 'n Dat sponsored player, Matt Blakely shot a 60 and a 57.
Now, Avery did come back and shoot a 64 and a 58 at the much more difficult course, Idlewild. Idlewild is not only one of the top championship courses, it is one of the most beautiful and well-kept courses you'll find anywhere, due to the hard work of Hall of Famer, Fred Salaz and a large number of local disc golfers who keep it looking great. If you want to play on of the best courses in the world, come on out. Pictured above is the island green for hole 3 at Idlewild, just to give you a taste!
To register or for more tournament information, check out Disc 'n Dat and here's a link to the current registration list. You can check out the results from last year and see the scores and the payouts. We'll see to it that you enjoy yourself at our tournament. If you have any questions let me know.

AJ Jolly Course Challenge Saturday 4/25

The second tournament in the Course Challenge Series is this Saturday 4/25 at AJ Jolly park.

Description: Picturesque lakeside 18 hole course, concrete teepads, fair distances, mostly open, some water hazards, can be windy. Refreshments available at gate. Turn right just before gate for parking close to hole 1.
Water & restroom facilities: across road near hole 14's basket.
Directions: I-275 to US 27S/471, so south 12.1 miles, turn left on KY824 (gas station on right), go 1.4 miles, turn right.

This is a really fun course with water coming into play on several holes. It is a really nice setting for disc golf and this Saturday is shaping up to be a beauty, so come on out.

Members of the Bluegrass Open Tournament Team will be there at lunch, we will be grilling up burgers with the fixins, chips, cookies and sodas - all for $6 - the $ raised will go towards the Disc 'n Dat Bluegrass Open. If you've never played AJ - the restaurant options around are limited, so don't waste your gas driving somewhere, sit back, enjoy the weather and eat there.

Remember - sign-up by 9:00 - tee off 9:30. It is going to be a great day for disc golf. I won't be able to be there myself. Have to work the shop and get the granddaughter in the afternoon. Have fun.

Drive for the Championship Update

The current standings of the 2009 National Tour Points Series - Drive for the Championship, presented by Woodchuck Cider are available at PDGA.com:
http://www.pdga.com/national-tour

In the Women's race Valarie Jenkins has a commanding lead after winning the first two National Tour events.
In the Men's race Barry Schultz has an 11 point lead after finishing third in the Memorial and second at the Atlanta Open. Atlanta Open champion Ken Climo is in second place with rising star Paul McBeth in third.
With the loss of the Player's Cup in 2009, players who want to contend for the points race and be eligible for the season ending bonuses will be required to compete in at least four of the ten National Tour events, as well as the World Championship and the United States Disc Golf Championship (men) or the United States Womens Disc Golf Championship (women).

The third event in the 2009 Drive for the Championship will take place at the Green Country Open in Oklahoma on April 25-26 when the PDGA Tour will converge at the Taylor Ranch and Lodge, a first time National Tour venue.

Collegiate Disc Golf Championships

North Augusta, SC – The third annual Collegiate Disc Golf Championships proved that the sport is alive and growing in the college ranks. While the first Championships hosted six teams, and the second twelve, this year's events showed seventeen teams committing to battle for the title of National Collegiate Champion.
The home course for the Championships was the Hippodrome, one of four courses used in the 2006 Professional World Championships. Perched on a hilltop overlooking downtown Augusta Georgia, the course is constantly evolving thanks to a dedicated full time grounds crew. The well manicured fairways and interesting land obstacles are a testament to their commitment. In its current version, the course features three tees and and lots of USDGC style yellow rope.
For the first time this year, the tournament began on Thursday with a qualifying round. This was due to a high interest from many schools. Seven schools were expected for the qualifying round, three of which played in the qualifier for four available spots. This tradition of a qualifier will continue as a way for colleges who have not earned a invitation to play in the Championships.
Hole #15 at the Hippodrome - Treasure Island
Friday was the true start of the tournament and featured an ominous wind that can often affect elevated courses. While playing the easiest of the three tees with no OBs, Zac Simpson of Alabama had a 9 under 51. Four other players earned an 8 down 52: Erik Bailey (Arkansas), Drew Davis (Miss State), Ryan Black (Arkansas), and William Scott (Arkansas).
The second round on Saturday featured the medium length Blue Tees with the OB in play. Tyler Harbin from the University of Alabama-Huntsville shot a 5 under 55 to take the field. Following closely on his heels was Logan Grasseth from the University of Oregon with a 4 under 56. Three players managed a three down 57: William Scott (Arkansas), Taylor Kahn (Georgia College), and Robert Stroup (Miss State.)
The singles competition continued on Saturday with the team captains voting to include the OB ropes on the red course. With less wind, the scores were surprisingly lower. William Scott from the University of Arkansas shot a smoking 12 down 48. Scott was followed by Ryan Freibert from the University of Kentucky with an 11 down 49 and Erik Bailey of the University of Arkansas with a 10 down 50.
Saturday afternoon featured the longest, toughest layout of the Hippodrome. One round of singles from the black tees truly separated the players. When the dust cleared, it was Drew Davis from Mississippi State University at the top of the leader board. With the singles competition completed, Drew was named the Collegiate Medal Champion. The top six earned a place on the 1st All-American Team, the next six earned 2nd All-American Honors. Full individual singles results can be found here.
2009 Collegiate Medal (Singles) Champion Drew Davis
On Sunday, the final day of competition, two full four man teams played each other in a round of alternate shot doubles. The top score from the team pair for each hole was counted towards their total. Augusta State shot the best team score with an eight down 60. The top pair was from the University of Alabama. Alex Butler and Drew Patton shot a solid 5 down 63 to earn the title of Doubles Champions.
A putting competition followed the doubles competition. Developed as an event to be crowd friendly, the vision of the competition is for it to take place in a stadium. Seven stations were placed in front of a basket and each team had ten putters to traverse the course. They were rewarded with a plus/minus score based on how far away they were able to putt. The University of Arkansas shot a great 5 down to win the stage. Combined with their total team score, they were able to secure second place overall.
Combining the total scores of the tournament, the team from Mississippi State University captured the title of 2009 Collegiate Team Championships. Elevated by outstanding play of singles Champion Drew Davis, the team represented the ideals of teamwork, dedication and concentration to win the championship.
Congratulations to all the teams who made the journey. We look forward to a bigger and better 2010 championship. Stay tuned to ncdgu.com for more on qualifying standards and how to get your team involved!
Final team standings can be found here.

Lexington Open this weekend

Just want to say good luck to all those who will participate in the Lexington Open this weekend. Unfortunately I will have to miss again. I've had to miss this tournament the last several years and it has always been one of my favorites - great courses and great people. Thanks to Everett Lasley for his past events and thanks to Lyle McCoon for putting on the Lexington Open this year.

Also, I will miss competing against some of my good buddies, Bo Nash, Jeff Eades and Jack Fouts. Those are just a few of my good buddies and we always have a good time playing together and competing.

Good luck to Disc 'n Dat sponsored players Liz Shooner, Jeff Eades and Matt Blakely.

I just saw that another one of my good friends and World Champion Johnny Sias is going to be there. Someone say Hi to Johnny for me!

I see that Lexington has a picture of Strohs - Mark Stottlemeyer - on their website and this is a picture of him here. I really liked Strohs and hope you all have a moment of silence for Strohs at the tournament. He was always good for a laugh. He apparently passed away a few weeks ago and we will miss him.

Twitter Account Used to Broadcast Fart Details

Randy Sarafan has helped the human race hit a new ‘all-time low’ on the evolutionary scale. He has modified his office chair with technology that will detect when he emmits a gasous cloud from his anus and it ranks it on methane density. It then transmits this information through his Twitter account to all his followers (which stand at 200 sick folks right now).
The setup is surprisingly simple and there is even an online guide so you can create your own. It involves, a natural gas sensor does the sniffing; an Arduino does the thinking; an XBee wireless module does the communicating; Twitter does the sharing. It’s a feat, to be sure.

National Collegiate Disc Golf Championships

The National Collegiate Disc Golf Union (NCDGU) is pleased to announce that the 3rd annual National Collegiate Disc Golf Championships will be held on April 17-19, 2009 at the Hippodrome Disc Golf Course in North Augusta, SC.
From the PDGA website:
"The NCDGU has been working diligently to continue the growth and exposure of collegiate disc golf. The championship has grown from 6 teams in the first year to a full slate of 20 teams in 2009 with an additional number of teams competing in the First-Flight Division. In 2009, the Collegiate Championships will play host to teams coming from all across the country including Southern California, Oregon, and Nebraska. The NCDGU is excited and passionate about the direction that collegiate disc golf is headed.
Last year, the University of Georgia capped off a great weekend of disc golf action with a solid final round to capture the 2008 Collegiate Disc Golf Championships. Challengers from the University of Kentucky, Clemson and Virginia Tech could not touch the lead built by UGA but fought hard none the less. Look for PDGA media coverage of the event this weekend at PDGA.com including scoring and photo galleries.
For information regarding the collegiate championships, visit the National Collegiate Disc Golf Union's website at: http://ncdgu.com/ "

WE ARE MOVING!

No, it wasn't an April Fools - we are moving. We are currently in the process. We are only moving two doors down from where we have been for over ten years. We will now be at 155 Lloyd Ave. in the same strip center where we have been.

Today was rough - the phones got turned off in the old shop and new ones in the new place, but it took some work to get the computer set up and the internet working. Finally figured out we had an old Zoomtown modem and the new shop needed the new one!

Please excuse our mess as we are moving. We do have some in-store specials to help you deal with the mess. Thanks to all of our great customers and come see us in our new digs too.

Get Well Tim!

I know some of you may know Tim and some may not, but as this says Tim is a great guy and has done a lot for the sport and for Innova. Some good wishes for him are in order. From the PDGA website:

"Disc Golf Hall of Famer, Tim Selinske (PDGA#2026), one of the 4 founding partners of INNOVA Disc Golf, the only person to have played in every PDGA World Championship, Tournament Director of US Masters, and one of the finest people on the planet is very ill. Tentative diagnosis is liver abscess/liver cancer. Tim has been a tireless supporter and promoter of disc sports especially disc golf since before his days with old Wham-O International Frisbee Association in the late Seventies. It is almost impossible to to know how many of our lives he has positively touched directly and indirectly with his great good humor, gentleness of spirit and generosity. It has been said, "If you don't like Tim, there is something wrong with you." Tim is facing some tough challenges and your words of support can help lift his spirits. Please send your messages to him, he needs to know how very much he means to all of us.
Mail can be sent to:
Tim Selinske85 West Longden AveArcadia, CA 91007
E-mail to: tim.selinske@innovadiscs.com
Tim has a Facebook page and well wishers can also leave messages there.
On behalf of the PDGA and the entire disc golf community, we wish Tim the very best and a speedy recovery!"

Disc 'n Dat Retail Location Moving 2 Doors Down

I know Dolly Parton sang a song about 2 doors down, drinking and laughing and having a party. Some of that will apply here - maybe all.

We are moving our retail store, but only moving it a couple of doors down in the same plaza we are currently located - new address is 155 Lloyd Ave. They are going to do some renovating of our current space and the other spot has already gone through that.

We haven't set an exact date yet but it should be within a few weeks. Spread the word that we will move but still in the same plaza. Thanks and we'll have a grand re-opening or whatever after we get situated in our new space.

Feldberg Wins Our Poll

Yes, Dave Feldberg was a runaway winner in our "Who will have the best year in disc golf?" poll by a huge margin. Ok, it wasn't that many votes, but still a huge margin. Feldberg had 8 votes, Locastro 2 and Jenkins 1. Thanks to all those who voted.

PDGA Tech Standards Alert - Gateway Voodoo

Here's the news a lot of you were looking to hear, especially those going to play in the Bowling Green Am Championships:
"The new "Voodoo" putter by Gateway Disc Sports was approved for play in PDGA sanctioned competition on 3/31/2009.
PDGA Approved Discs & Targets: http://www.pdga.com/tech-standards "

Good luck to all going down to Bowling Green and have plenty of fun. Won't be able to make it down to the Flymart this year. Got too much going on with moving our shop and other stuff. Hopefully be back next year.
