Gateway "Voodoo" not PDGA approved: 3/26/2009

From the PDGA: "As of 3/24/09, the new "Voodoo" putter by Gateway Disc Sports has not been approved by the PDGA for use in sanctioned events, despite the words "PDGA Approved Golf Disc" in the hotstamp. The Voodoo was recently submitted to the technical standards committee and will be tested as soon as the testing fees have been received by the office."
The check has been sent in so it should clear any day now and the disc will be approved. It does look like it will be approved in time for the Bowling Green Amateur Championsips.

Check this link out for more information on the technical standards for discs and targets.

Atlanta Open has rain

Well, I do a post on rain the other day and a post on the NT Atlanta Open and wha la - it rains at the Atlanta Open. How do I do it?

Anyway, here's a video from this weekend in Atlanta.

Ken Climo keeps on winning as he wins by 4 strokes over Barry Schultz. Not too many people voted for him in our early polls, so he didn't show up in the final poll, but you never count 'The Champ" out.
"If anyone was wondering how the drama would unfold Sunday at The 2009 Atlanta Open presented by RE/MAX, they needed to look no further than the morning round’s first six holes to find out.
Ken Climo took full advantage of his precision long game at the expanded Cumming’s Central Park course, as well as some early mistakes by his closest competitors, David Feldberg, Barry Schultz, and Kevin McCoy, to quickly distance himself from the field and cruise to a four-throw win at first PDGA National Tour event hosted by the Atlanta Disc Golf Organization.
“I had a two stroke lead over Dave. I wanted at least to hold my lead going into the last round,” Climo said during a phone interview after his impressive performance. “But my lead swelled from two to seven in just a matter of six holes. It was a collective of things throughout the first six holes today that really made the difference,” Climo explained, clearly pleased to win his first National Tour title since The Golden State Classic in May of 2007.

PDGA National Tour Turns Southeast with The Atlanta Open This Weekend

The PDGA tour is heating up and is in Hotlanta this weekend. This info came from the http://www.pdga.com/ website. Anyone heading down to Hotlanta this weekend?

The second leg of the PDGA's ten-stop 2009 National Tour is in the Atlanta suburbs of Cumming and Roswell this weekend, as The Atlanta Open gets set for a great weekend of fun and flying discs. Event tournament director, Rand Eberhard has been instrumental in growing the Atlanta Disc Golf Organization over the last decade and has had his sites set on hosting an NT event from the beginning. Eberhard, and his very talented team of volunteers, will get their chance this weekend, as most of the top touring pros will be in the 90-player field. "Hosting a PDGA National Tour event is such a great opportunity. Joining a list of only ten NTs during the 2009 season is quite an honor," Eberhard said. "We have had so much support from our sponsors and local disc golf clubs. Without their support, as well as the PDGA's, disc golfers around the country would not have such a great Tour to be a part of. The National Tour has given us the ability to grow with the sport of disc golf as marketing and promotion become a central point for each event," Eberhard observed.

Included in this very talented field will many of the well-known PDGA touring pros, David Feldberg (Springfield, Oregon), Ken Climo (Clearwater, Florida), and Barry Schultz (Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin), as well as regional talents Brad Hammock (Decatur, Georgia) and Kevin McCoy (Senoia, Georgia). The Atlanta Open will also create great intrigue, since the Open division will feature 13-year old and reigning PDGA Junior World Champion, David Wiggins, Jr. from High Point, North Carolina. Though Wiggins has certainly thrown with this caliber of talent at the USDGC, he has not yet competed against them on as big as a stage as the PDGA National Tour. The disc golf community will all be watching to see how he fares. On the women's side, two-time, and reigning PDGA World Champion, Valarie Jenkins (Hinckley, Ohio) will be tested by the emerging talent of touring pro Liz Lopez (Corpus Christi, Texas), 2007 PDGA Rookie of the Year Sarah Stanhope (Easley, South Carolina), and local favorite Courtney Peavy (Senoia, Georgia). You can follow all the action on pdga.com with daily coverage from PDGA Media, as well as live scoring from the leadgroups and video highlights during the weekend.

PDGA Discgolfer Magazine in the mail

From the http://www.pdga.com/ website:

By bgraham Mar 26, 2009 Tags:

The Professional Disc Golf Association is pleased to announce that the first issue of DiscGolfer, the official publication of the PDGA, was delivered to the post office in Fulton, Missouri on Monday, March 23. The publication will be wending its way to U.S. members via standard mail. Standard mail (formerly known as third class or bulk mail) delivers to most households in 10-14 days. However, some issues go through the system as quickly as five days or as slowly as 24 days.
The issues are mailed in a protective plastic cover, which helps to keep the issues intact, and more likely to be delivered. We updated the PDGA address list with the United States Postal Service’s database before labeling them. This is important because these issues will not be forwarded if a member has failed to keep the PDGA and/or the USPS updated with a change of address. Please remember that it is each member’s responsibility to keep the PDGA informed of an address changes. You may do this by e-mailing your new address and other contact information to coa@pdga.com.
If you have not moved and still have not received your issue by April 16, please e-mail the PDGA office at office@pdga.com. If you have renewed your membership or joined in the last two weeks or so, your issue is likely going out with the supplemental mailing of about 700 members on March 30. The DiscGolfer staff hopes you’ll enjoy this first issue, and as always, are eager for your constructive feedback and suggestions.

Disc Golf Lunch?

So, how do you think you'd play in the second round of a tournament after eating this burger?

"GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan - Well, at least the salsa is low-cal. The West Michigan Whitecaps, a minor league baseball team, will be offering up major league cholesterol, carbohydrates and calories in an enormous hamburger being added to the menu this year at the Fifth Third Ballpark. The 4-pound, $20 burger features five beef patties, five slices of cheese, nearly a cup of chili and liberal doses of salsa and corn chips, all on an 8-inch sesame-seed bun. That's a lot of dough!

The Grand Rapids Press reports that anyone who eats the entire 4,800-calorie behemoth in one sitting will receive a special T-shirt. Saner fans can divide it up with a pizza cutter and share.
The Midwest League team is a Class A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers."

Wow, I'd have to have something more than a tee-shirt if I was going to try and eat that baby! Atleast a tote bag to throw up in. Let me know if there's anyone out there who tries this one.

Current Poll - Who's going to have the best year?

Wow, right now we have Dave Feldberg with a huge lead over both Nikko and Avery. Anyone else out there who likes the chances of either of them? If so, come on and vote. I can tell you I voted for Nikko - I think he is poised to have an awesome year. I think he has gained alot of experience over the last few years and has been in fourseomes of some of the best players and now he's going to bring it all together. I think the mental part of his game has improved and we'll see that have a big impact this year. Ok, so it's just my 1/2 penny worth, but hey, it's something. What's your penny say? Get those votes in there.

Bowling Green Amateur Championships

Yes, this is one of the biggest and best venues for Amateurs to show their skills and participate with the best in their division. It is also just a great place to have fun with tons of other disc golfers. It is just as much of a disc golf get-together as it is a competition. But there is extreme competition. If you haven't gone to this one and your an Am, you need to do so.

This is from the PDGA website:
"One of the longest running events in the DGA/PDGA history is the Bowling Green Open, starting in April of 1978 and continuing each year in what has become a favorite destination for disc golf players each spring. Split into two events since 2000, an amateur weekend (April 3-4-5) and a professional weekend (April 25-26), the amateur event is considered the Daytona 500 of Disc Golf. With upwards of 700 players, a week full of preliminary disc golf events, a dozen courses in the area to enjoy, and spring flowering trees, and once cut grass fairways in the mid-south, this early season event is a must to test your game against the largest amateur fields on tour."

Does anyone have any stories from previous events they'd like to share? Let's hear who is going?

Women's World Rankings

PDGA World Rankings Are In - Here's the Men's

PDGA Player Ratings indicate how well players have been playing on their PDGA event courses. And this ratings system works all over the world. The new PDGA World Player Ranking System blends PDGA Player Ratings with finish positions in a few major events where head-to-head competition plays more of a role in the rankings. To date, just a few events bring together the top men and women from around the world in direct competition. As more sponsorship money is generated and more countries produce players at a high level, there will be more events where top players from many countries compete. As this happens, the World Rankings will shift to using more and more event results in the calculations rather than relying primarily on player ratings.
The current World Ranking calculation includes men from North America whose rating is over 999 based on at least 12 rounds in B-tier and higher events in the previous 12 months. It also includes Non-North American men with ratings over 999 based on at least 8 rounds in sanctioned events. The top ranked man in each PDGA affiliated country regardless of rating is included only in the yearend ranking. The same process is used for women but their rating minimum is 900. Players must be current PDGA members to be included.

NT Series Standings

This is from the PDGA website:

"The standings of the 2009 National Tour Points Series - Drive for the Championship, presented by Woodchuck Cider have now now been published:
http://www.pdga.com/national-tour
Following his first NT victory at the Memorial in Arizona, Nikko Locastro leads the open division standings after the first of ten National Tour events. Coming off his very strong finish at the end of 2008, and a very impressive showing at the World Championships, Locastro looks to be a strong contender for the points title in 2009.
In the women's standings, Val Jenkins has the early season lead over Des Reading due to her victory at the Memorial. Look for these two to contend for the points title all year along with a handful of other seasoned veterans and promising up and comers.
With the loss of the Player's Cup in 2009, players who want to contend for the points race and be eligible for the season ending bonuses will be required to compete in at least four of the ten National Tour events, as well as the World Championship and the United States Disc Golf Championship (men) or the United States Womens Disc Golf Championship (women).

The second event in the 2009 Drive for the Championship will take place at the Atlanta Open in Georgia on March 28-29 when an already capacity field of 90 competitors will gather at the National Tour's newest event.
Atlanta Registration List: http://www.pdga.com/tournament-results?TournID=8388
Be on the look out for complete PDGA Media coverage of the Atlanta Open at PDGA.com including video highlights, photos and live scoring from the Peach state.
Be sure to check the National Tour page at PDGA.com following each NT event for updated standings."

Playing in the rain

Ok, it's raining here today and it made me think about how I play in the rain. No, I'm not a great rain player but I have gotten a little better over the years. I think most of it for me is mental - I just don't enjoy getting soaked, muddy and cold any more. Ok, yeah I'm getting older and that could be part of it. But I've played in enough rain to not let it bother me as much as I did when I first started playing in tournaments.

So, I'm thinking... are there players who feel they play better in the rain than their competitors? What makes that so? How do you keep your game in the rain? What's most important to you for playing in the rain?

Here's some things I thought of that I struggle with:

* mainly, my hands/disc need to be as dry as possible; my hands get wet and when they get too wet, they just don't have any feel to them and I can't throw well at all. I can dry my disc off as much as I want but if my fingers are clammy wet then I just have a hard time throwing. I've tried Birdie Bags, extra dry towels and more but I still struggle with it.

* muddy feet and pants - sometimes the course just gets so muddy that I have a hard time when I'm walking around with all that mud on my feet and pants. I think it tires me out and just takes a mental toll on me.

* Umbrellas!! Ugh! I don't like them. They are a pain in the ass. They blow in the wind. Some people have them, some don't. So some are trying to get under somebody else's umbrella. They are being put up, put down, blowing, poking people in the eyes, left back at the tee. "Damn, I left my umbrella back there." "Man, I'm sorry I didn't know you were there - did it get you in the eye?" And in the end, at the of the round, you're just as wet as most. Ok, yeah there's always that one or two guys that you see after the round and they look like they've been mud wrestling or have been in hurricane Clyde! But for the most part, we're all wet.
So, if anyone wants to chime in and tell us your thoughts on playing tournaments in the rain, have at it. I'd like to hear. I'm sure some of you have some good stories about playing in the rain too, so bring 'em on.

Final Poll - Who's going to have the best year?

Well, we've whittled it down to a top three of Nikko, Avery and Dave. Should be a close poll. I'm sure there will be some really good tourneys this year with these three shooting it out for the best player of the year. And who knows? There may be some others that sneak into the picture and have something to say about it.

Tell your friends about the poll and let's try to get a good number of people voting. Thanks for all those who have voted on the polls in the past.

Who is this?

Don't say Dan Bayless!!

Well, it's Charles Manson. Some may know about Charlie and his history while others may not be a part of the hippie crowd that remembers him. Here's some information many may not know.

First known as "no name Maddox,". Manson was born to unmarried, 16-year-old Kathleen Maddox in Cincinnati General Hospital, in Cincinnati, Ohio; no more than three weeks after his birth, he was Charles Milles Maddox. For a period after her son's birth Kathleen Maddox was married to a laborer named William Manson, whose last name the boy was given. Charles Manson's biological father appears to have been a "Colonel Scott", against whom Maddox filed a bastardy suit that resulted in an agreed judgment in 1937. Possibly, the boy never really knew him.

Charles Milles Manson (born November 12, 1934) is an American criminal who led what became known as the Manson Family, a quasi-commune that arose in California in the late 1960s.[1][2][3] He was found guilty of conspiracy to commit the Tate/LaBianca murders, which members of the group carried out at his instruction. Through the joint-responsibility rule of conspiracy,[4] he was convicted of the murders themselves.
Manson is associated with "Helter Skelter," the term he took from the Beatles song of that name and construed as an apocalyptic race war the murders were putatively intended to precipitate. This connection with rock music linked him, from the beginning of his notoriety, with pop culture, in which he became an emblem of insanity, violence, and the macabre. Ultimately, the term was used as the title of the book that prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi wrote about the Manson murders.
At the time the Family began to form, Manson was an unemployed ex-convict, who had spent half his life in correctional institutions for a variety of offenses. In the period before the murders, he was a distant fringe member of the Los Angeles music industry, chiefly via a chance association with Beach Boy Dennis Wilson. After Manson was charged with the crimes, recordings of songs written and performed by him were released commercially. Artists including Guns N' Roses and Marilyn Manson have covered his songs in the decades since.
Manson's death sentence was automatically reduced to life imprisonment when a decision by the Supreme Court of California temporarily eliminated the state's death penalty in 1972.[5] California's eventual reestablishment of capital punishment did not affect Manson, who is an inmate at Corcoran State Prison.

You can find more on him in Wikidpedia here.

Cleanup Day at Lincoln Ridge (Banklick)

Steve Trauger, disc golfer and Kenton Co. Parks Recreation Programs Coordinator announces Lincoln Ridge Disc Golf Course Clean-Up Day March 21, 2009 The Lincoln Ridge (formerly Banklick Woods) Disc Golf Course Clean-Up Day has been set for Saturday, March 21. Meet at Shelterhouse 1 at 10:00 am. Trash bags and gloves will be provided and all volunteers will earn Kenton County Parks & Recreation t-shirts! We will walk the disc golf course fairways and rough and pick up litter. We will replace missing or damaged tee signs. We will work on tee pads and drainages. We will pile sticks and blowdowns and create “rabbit-tat”. Sticks, loosely piled, make great habitat for small birds and mammals, even snakes! If we make homes for the middle of the food chain, hopefully, we’ll bring in some of what is now the top of the food chain: hawks, owls, and falcons. Plan to work until noon. Trash bags and gloves will be provided. Rain or shine – a couple of hours in a drizzle won’t kill you! Bring your plastic – golf discs, that is; we know you’ll want to get in a round or two later! Call and let me know you’ll be there to help - Call Steve Trauger (859) 525-PLAY (7529) for details. This is one of the most beautiful courses in the area. Let's pitch in and help.

Thursday 3/19 Discraft Disc Deal

Ok, stop in the store tomorrow 3/19 for a deal on any Discraft disc - get $2 off if you mention the Disc 'n Dat Blog. This is in-store and not available with other discounts. Current GCFDA Club members will get an extra 5% off any Discraft disc!

Heading out to Banklick for weekly doubles

Well, less than an hour now and I'll be heading on over to Banklick - I know it is now Lincoln Ridge - but I'll probably call it Banklick for atleast a couple of years anyhow.

For those who don't know or might be in the area on a Wednesday evening - at 6pm we have a random draw doubles ace fund there. Cost is $7 - 5 going to the nightly winners and 2 going to the ongoing ace fund, which is capped at $200, which I'm pretty sure it is at right now and another one has started. This week we start an optional Mulligan for $1. This $ will go to the Disc 'n Dat Bluegrass Open which will be June 6-7 at Banklick and Idlewild disc golf courses.

This is a great place to learn more about the sport, to meet friends, improve your game and heh, maybe take home a little extra cash. So come on out.

Who's going to have the best year? Pt 2 Poll

Ok, you voted and now we have a Top Ten to vote on. Well, actually we're just like that American Idol show and our Top Ten is a Top Eleven as we had a tie for the last spot. I'll take the top five and ties of this poll to get who we'll vote on for the Top Player of the year in our next poll. Thanks to those who voted and encourage your friends to vote. Once again, you can vote for more than one until we get it down to five.

Nikko's Bag

Just thought I'd share this with you from Dave McCormack:

"I saw Nikkos bag today.it looked like he had a peach Star Boss, an excaliber, 2 destroyers, an E spirit, an Illusion ( rollers I'm guessing), an E sabre, E Blaze, E Warrior, A cyrstal Buzz, an Element and about 6 different Wizards"

So, there's your mixed bag sponsorship by Gateway. I do think it's a good way to get some good players out there who aren't sponsored and maybe aren't throwing Gateway to come on board. Dave has definitely been creative in his disc molding and approach to the masses.

Whos Going to Have the Best Year?

I've started a poll to the right here that lists 20 top PDGA players. They are players who have 1000+ ratings, are in the top 20 of the World Rankings and/or finished high in the Memorial National Tour this past week. I'm looking at a combined wins, winning$ and rating as the top player.

No, it isn't a scientific poll by any means, but just want to see what others think and have some fun with it. I plan on running this one and then whittling it down to top 10 next time and then top 5 and then the number 1 player of the year as voted on by Disc 'n Dat Bloggers! Vote for your top 10 this time. Have fun with it.

Harbin Rat Classic Sunday March 15

Yeah, the first big PDGA tournament of the year around this area is the Harbin Rat Classic at Harbin Park disc golf course in Fairfield, Ohio on Sunday March 15. Nick Engle, TD, does an excellent job of putting on the best tournaments around. Even if you aren't registered - too bad, there's now a waiting list - you can go on out and check out the play at a really nice disc golf course and see how a top notch disc golf tournament is run. There will be lots of prizes and amenities for all who play. Here's a link to the tournament website

Good luck to everyone who's playing. Oh yeah, Disc 'n Dat is also a sponsor of this tournament.

Eddie Doyle - Do you know his name?

Eddie Doyle, the bartender who inspired the "Cheers" tv show, recently became one of the latest hits of the economic turndown. He was laid off after 35 years at the bar Cheers in Boston. For nearly 35 years, or almost half of his life, Doyle has been the smiling face behind the bar at Cheers - the Beacon Hill pub that inspired the TV show with the same name in the early 1980s. As one of Boston's last fabled bartenders, he served drinks and advice for five decades. During that time, his charitable deeds became the stuff of legend. Along the way he got to know thousands, introduced dozens of singles who would eventually marry, and held numerous fund-raisers that attracted everybody from the glitterati to the near-homeless.

When Hollywood was scoping Boston for the perfect "Cheers," the directors came face-to-face with Eddie Doyle, a grinning bartender who embodied the phrase, "sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name." An avid fan of all Boston sports teams and quick witted, Eddie soon became famous with Bostonians and Cheers fans alike.

But a few weeks ago he was told by Tom Kershaw, owner of the Cheers bar, that the recession had hit his industry and he was being laid off. Doyle, who is in his late 60s, said he's surprised but not bitter.
"I'm a casualty of the economic situation that we're in," said Doyle, who spent part of this week cleaning out his office.
Kershaw acknowledged that it was a difficult decision. "Business is way off," he said, adding that he would continue to send Doyle a weekly paycheck until the end of the year. "It was very tough. Personally, for me, it was a disaster. Eddie and I have been friends for 40 years."

Here's some links where I found this information: boston.com and cheersboston.com
Yeah, I don't always just have disc golf stuff on here. I'll throw in something else from time to time.

Course Challenge Series Opener

GCFDA Course Challenge Tournament Series kicks off this Saturday 3/14/09 at Harbin disc golf course in Fairfield, Ohio.

Sign-up deadline: 9:00 am

Player's meeting: 9:15 am

Tee off: 9:30 am
The tournaments consist of two rounds with approximately one hour for lunch in between rounds.

Cost:
Open $20
Open Women $10
Open Master / Grandmasters $10
Advanced $10
Advanced Masters / Grandmasters $10
Novice $5

There is a $3 non-member fee for all non-GCFDA members (Novice Men & Am Women are exempt from the non-member fee), and a $5 late fee for sign-ups after 9:00am. There is also an optional $2 ace fund. If no aces are hit that day, a CTP will be run for half the fund and the other half will be carried over to the next tournament. Cash is awarded to Open/Master/Grandmaster divisions. All other divisions receive credit towards discs and miscellaneous equipment sold after the awards are finished. A pre-made chart is used to calculate the payout.

Series Points:
The course challenge standings are based on a player's finishes in the course challenges throughout the calendar year. Started in 2000, player's points are based upon the place that they finished in their division. For example, 1st place gets one point, fifth get five, tenth gets ten, etc. Players that did not play in a particular course challenge are awarded points equal to the maximum turnout of players in their division plus one over all course challenges in a year. This weights all tournaments the same No one is penalized more for missing one tournament over another. For example, In Advanced 24 people play Mt Airy, 10 play Pride, someone who misses Mt Airy gets 25 points, someone who misses Pride gets 25 points (2003). The two worst point totals of the year (out of the nine course challenges) are dropped from the total points for every player. The other course challenge points are tallied together to form a total score. The player with the lowest total score is the course challenge series champion in that division. (The system is roughly based on the cross country point system).

For more information about the Course Challenge Series and schedule check it out at CCS Page The club's CCS is one of the longest running tournament series in disc golf and is fun for those who are just getting started in the sport and want to see where they stand against other disc golfers, those who want to learn about tournament play and learn from other experienced disc golfers. It is also a good friendly competition among players of different skill levels from the novice to the pro. A CCS Series Champion is crowned at the end of the 9 tournament series in November. Let me know if you have any questions. Check out cincinnatidiscgolf.com for lots of information about disc golf in the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area. There's info about courses, local events, PDGA events, weekly recreational events and much more.

Nikko for Team Gateway

Here's a pic of Nikko after the last hole for the win. Lookout for Nikko this year. It could be the year he puts it all together and wins a bunch. Gateway discs are on the move. If you haven't tried any, you should.

Final Results for Memorial

Saturday's scores show Nikko Locastro as the 2009 Memorial Champ, Val Jenkins winning Open Women, Dean Tannock taking the Masters, Harvey Brandt the Granmasters, Sheila Kirkham wins Masters Women and John Kirkland take the Senior Grandmasters division.

Nikko takes his first National Tour Event win, with a 3 stroke win over Avery Jenkins. What a sweet win for the young player. He has been close in the PDGA Worlds and other tourneys but this is a big one. Congrats to Nikko. I'm sure Dave McCormack of Gateway Disc Sports is proud of this one. Nikko is sponsored by Gateway. Gateway is the only sponsoring disc manufacturer, I believe, that allows players to throw a mixed bag - throw other manufacturer's discs. I'm not sure what all is in Nikko's bag - I know he does throw primarily Gateway.

My buddy Jeff Eades just couldn't ever get untracked and finished in 9th in the Grandmasters division. Probably couldn't get used to not having on 5 layers of clothing, gloves and all the snow and ice. Seeing the pics and the weather I'm sure he and Debby had a good time.

Val Jenkins wins the Women's Open with a 2 stroke win over Des Reading and Liz Lopez was 1 storke back of her in third. Real close one there.

Dean Tannock wins by 2 over Robert Ryan with several other players 1-2 strokes behind that.

Sheila Kirkham took a 3 stroke win over Peggy Berry in Women's Masters while Harvey Brandt and John Kirkland took home rather easy wins in Men's Grandmasters and Senior Grandmasters.

You can go here for complete scores .

The Memorial Day 2

Nikko Locastro shoots a 44, -11 for a total of -21 for the 2 days to take the lead, 1 stroke over John child who's still in second with a -20. Barry Schultz is 3rd with a -19 and Ken Climo, Avery Jenkins and Steve Rico are tied for 4th at -17. Then there are several people right behind by one or two strokes. Looks like it's going to be a hot final day in Arizona.

Jeff Eades is hanging in 7th after the 2nd round in Grandmasters with Harvey Brandt leading at -2, 2 strokes ahead of Jeff Kennedy and Geoff Hungerford.

In the Women's Open division Des Reading has a one stroke lead over Val Jenkins at +4 for the tourney. Close one here too.

Yet another close one - in Masters Robert Ryan and Dean Tannock -10, have a 2 stroke lead over Tim Keith.

Sheila Kirkham has a 3 stroke lead over Peggy Berry in Masters women.

In Senior Grands, John Kirkland has a 5 stroke lead over Peter Shive.

Tune in tomorrow at PDGA.com to follow the action.

Strange but True

Ok, it's not disc golf but it's a good one so I just had to share it with you and hope you enjoy it like I did.

"On this date 36 years ago, Yankee teammates Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich made it known that they had traded their families. Seriously. Their entire families including wives, kids and dogs. Kekick and his new "wife" broke up shortly thereafter while Peterson and his new wife may still be together and may have four kids of their own. You can't make it up."
That's right. Back in 1972, Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich, both pitchers for the New York Yankees, swapped families.
Peterson traded his wife, Marilyn, his two kids and a poodle for Susan Kekich, the two Kekich children and a Bedlington terrier.
"We didn't trade wives; we traded lives," Kekich said.
Said Yankees executive Dan Topping after the trade was announced during spring training of 1973, "We may have to call off Family Day this season."
Gibbs remembers
America was aghast. That was the year the American League instituted the designated hitter rule, but commissioner Bowie Kuhn received much more mail about the bizarre trade.
Mississippian Jake Gibbs, who retired from the Yankees after the 1971 season, was stunned to learn what his two former teammates had done. Gibbs caught both of them and remembers them as "fun-loving guys who brought their wives and children to the family picnics we used to have."
"Fritz and Mike were good friends. They were really close, and their families were close. I guess we just didn't know how close," Jake says, before adding a catcher's astute, philosophical addendum as the only plausible explanation.
"Of course," Jake says, matter-of-factly, "they were both left-handers. You can never tell about lefties."
Spoken like a true catcher.
Peterson, Gibbs says, was the better pitcher.
"Fritz had great stuff and super control," Gibbs says. "He had some great years. Kekich had good stuff, but he didn't always know where it was going."
Peterson achieved a career record of 133 wins, 131 losses, but he was never quite the same after the family swap and the outcry that followed. Kekich wasn't so successful before the swap and fell apart after it. He was traded to the Indians later that same year.
You must wonder, as I did, what became of them.
28 years later . . .
Peterson, the better pitcher, also appears to have gotten the better of the trade. Peterson married the former Susanne Kekich, and they have four children of their own. Marilyn Peterson and Mike Kekich never married. She apparently got cold feet and backed out.
Kekich and Peterson were never close again. Their lives have followed exceedingly divergent paths, even for left-handers.
Kekich played baseball in Japan and South America before trying medical school in Mexico. He now lives in New Mexico, where he is remarried, and, at last report, worked as an insurance adjuster.
Peterson, who became deeply religious following the swap, later became an evangelist, worked without success in real estate, and now works on a casino boat in Elgin, Ill.
In 1992, Kekich wryly observed, "Neither Fritz Peterson nor I will ever make it into the Hall of Fame."
At least not the one in Cooperstown.

Anybody ever feel like doing that? Don't answer if you're still married to that person.

When money is tight, there’s always room for a cheap hobby, and Disc ‘n Dat has everything to get started with disc golf.
“It is a cheap sport for this economy,” said owner Dan Bayless. For 11 years, Disc ‘n Dat has been helping both newcomers and veterans to disc golf get all the supplies they need.
Customers can keep it simple with a general disc or go all out with a disc bundle, disc bags or even a pole hole, where players throw the disc, to practice on.
In addition to making sure players have the gear they need, Disc ‘n Dat helps keep the disc golf community vibrant.
Throughout the year, the store hosts several tournaments at area courses and Bayless serves as the vice president for the Greater Cincinnati Flying Disc Association.
The most recent tournament was the Icebowl at England/Idlewild Park and Boone Woods Feb. 7. Money raised from the tournament will benefit the Fairhaven Rescue Mission.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Ryan Beemer who correctly identified the Dodge Dart in the picture - so a Dodge Dart car and an R-Pro putter. Ryan wins an R-Pro Dart putter for coming up with the right answer. See, that could have been you. Watch for more little challenges coming your way from time to time.

First Round Leaders at the Memorial

David Feldberg is the leader after the first day at the Memorial in Arizona. Hey, our weather's going to be just about as nice! Anyway, Feldberg carded a -13 to lead by one over John Child. Then there's a bunch tied at -11, -10 and -9. Climo comes in at -9 at the end of the day.

I've got a change in the Grandmasters - looks like Geoff Hungerford shot a -3, so he's leading and has a 5 stroke lead over my boy Jeff. What's another stroke Jeff? Go after 'em today and show 'em what a lefty can do.

Ben Botte shot even. Rick Voakes -4. Both are playing in Open division.

Any shout-outs for your buds out there? Let's hear it!

More scores from the Memorial

Ok, Open Women's scores are in and Val Jenkins and Des Reading are tied at Even Par, 60, with Liz Lopez 1 shot back.

Early Men's Open scores have 3 golfers at -11: Matt Orum, Barry Schultz and Paul Ulibarri. More to come.

2009 Memorial

Just a quick update here:

My buddy Jeff Eades shot a 62 the first round which is 2 over par for the course. He's only 4 off the lead. Go get 'em tomorrow Jeff. No Open Men or Women's scores in yet but a couple of Masters shot -10. Best Senior Grand score was -1. Good luck to all who are participating. I'm not sure if we have any local people participating in the Amateur divisions or not. If anyone knows let us know here. Or if you have a local from where you are and want to post how they are doing go ahead and comment here. Later.

Glow Lights are back in

Yeah, wouldn't you know it? We play last night at Lincoln Ridge/Banklick and everybody needed lights. They didn't come in until this morning! Argh! So, if anybody needs some lights, we got 'em back in stock.

R-Pro Dart Review

This is from the PDGA Message Board:

"Here's da word on the R-Pro Dart: I've been throwing mine since last Monday and this disc goes right where you throw it. A bit faster than an Aviar which gives you a little carry on longer putts. When this disc hits the chains it stays! I have yet to have a bounce out as the new R-Pro plastic grips the chains and your hand as well. Weather has been cold and windy, looking forward to spring to really get into this disc."

When someone else gets one, let us know your review.

2009 Memorial Starts Today

2009 PDGA National Tour to launch in Scottsdale, Fountain Hills, Arizona ~ The Memorial to Kick off 7th Year of Disc Golf's PDGA National Tour
If it's the first week of March and it's disc golf, then it can only be The Memorial in Scottsdale and Fountain Hills, Arizona. Again this year, Dan and Sue Ginnelly will host over 350 players from around the world, as they all kick off the 2009 PDGA National Tour on the pro side, combined with a massive PDGA Super-Tour event on the amateur side.
As the presenting sponsor, Discraft has long been affiliated with The Memorial, where most disc golfers are taking their games out of moth balls and onto the extremely challenging confines of Vista del Camino Park in Scottsdale and the desert oasis at Fountain Hills.
The PDGA Touring players' clinic, organized by Jay Reading, will begin the programming for the event, followed by a Fly-mart at Duke's Sports Bar, and highlighted with the head-to-head-on disc golf competition Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
And while The Memorial features most of the top-ranked disc golfers in the PDGA, this event is as much about camaraderie, as it is about competition. So it truly captures the perfect combination of fun and flying discs.
Make sure to stay posted to pdga.com for scores, photos, feature stories, and video highlights on this first event of the 2009 PDGA National Tour, as well as throughout the entire disc golf season.

My good buddy, Jeff Eades, will be participating in his first Grandmasters event in the Memorial so this is big for him. I'm rooting for you Jeff. Go get 'em!

About the R-Pro Dart

A little more information on the Dart. This is what Dave Dunipace had to say about the R-Pro Dart on the PDGA Messge Board:
"The R-Pro Dart is basically a putter like the Aviar, but shaped like a small Aero. It has the same function as an Aviar, but has a slightly different grip, (slightly wider and shorter rim), is slightly faster, and has less low speed fade, with the same high speed stability. The small amount of low speed fade, along with a slightly lower profile grip, separate this putter from an Aviar. This makes the Dart easier to hit long range putts with its longer straight putting range at similar lower speeds. "

STAR Boss and new R-Pro Dart due in Thursday

Yes, the new discs will be in tomorrow. For those who like STAR plastic over Champion, the Boss will now be in STAR. And the newest plastic from Innova, the R-Pro will debut with the R-Pro Dart, a putter. You can check them out at in the New Products section

So, still no answers on what the car has to do with these new discs? I'll have a prize for the first correct answer. Just answer by using the Comments right below this entry.

Lincoln Ridge (formerly Banklick Woods) Cleanup

Steve Trauger, disc golfer and Kenton Co. Parks Recreation Programs Coordinator announces Lincoln Ridge Disc Golf Course Clean-Up Day March 21, 2009

The Lincoln Ridge (formerly Banklick Woods) Disc Golf Course Clean-Up Day has been set for Saturday, March 21.

New Polls - Have you thrown?

Just put a couple of new polls up: 1) asking if you've thrown a Z Surge SS or a Z Force and 2) asking if you've thrown a Boss or a Groove? You can vote for all four discs if you have thrown them. Polls end Friday morning.

Bag Tag Shootout

18 people showed up on a cold Sunday morning at Highland Hills yesterday to get the Bag Tags going for this year. A lot of fun was had by all. We played 3 rounds and the top 2 of each card won $. Dan Hollingshead came away with the #1 tag. We were finished by 1:00.

Thanks again to Nick for running the Shootout tourney. There will be a weekly tag round at Mt. Airy on Thursday evenings after the time change.

Bag Tags are now available at Disc 'n Dat for $10. Come in and get one. You can challenge your buddies for low tag. They will also be available at the weekly tag rounds when they start. We can even send you one if you want, just contact me. Oh, by the way, even though I didn't shoot very good yesterday I came away with #10 bag tag - yeah, I'm in the top 10.
