Free Disc Raffle for New CC Series Finale Players

Looks like the weather is going to be beautiful for the CC Series finale at Banklick. Signup by 9:30 - tee at 10:00. We'll have the awards at Willies in Independence afterwards. The latest poll is over and there were three people who don't come out to course challenges, so why not come on out and check this one out. They are really fun and not as serious as a PDGA tournament so you get to learn some of the rules of tournament play, learn new skills and meet people that you can play with on a regular basis. And who knows, you may find out playing in a tournament is pretty nice. So, to get some new people out there tomorrow, Disc 'n Dat is offering a free disc to one new course challenge player tomorrow. Just let us know when you sign up if this is your first course challenge tournament and you'll be entered into a raffle for a free disc from Disc 'n Dat.

Yeah, the Icebowl Krazy series is back. The schedule is:

Mt. Airy - 1/10/09

Banklick - 1/24/09

Disc Golf Magazine

Also, while I'm thinking about it, the free Disc Golf Magazine is no longer in production. Those responsible for that magazine are also the producers of the Revolution Bags. Probably just a bit too much to do both. Thanks for putting out the ones you did though. I really appreciated the magazine as well as many of our customers did.

Flying Disc Magazine - When?

As I'm sure many of you have been wondering - I certainly have been - when is the next issue of Flying Disc Magazine going to get here? I don't think any of the people who clamored to take this endeavor of putting out a disc golf magazine to the public and PDGA members on really understand that it is quite an undertaking and usually the boasts made prior are like political ads - just some hot air. Well, here's a blurb from Rich Givens (no, not Rick!) from Flying Disc Magazine about the next issue that was on the PDGA Message Board.

"Hello all. Producing FDM is a wonderful opportunity and is a source of tremendous joy. It's also a challenging and taxing endeavor, especially in our first year.We are very aware of the timing of the last couple of magazines and want to give you an update on things. Issue 4 is currently wrapped, finishing up production, and will be on trucks next week. From there we follow quickly with release of issue 5 in early December. Subscribers will then receive an additional issue (6), a special edition Year In Review magazine. We are holding that one as close to the end of the year as possible (to cover as much as possible, including the upcoming Players Cup major) but it'll be shipping before the end of December as well. We have received a great deal of feedback, and we know that you are eagerly anticipating the next issues. Thanks for all of the support and we appreciate your understanding as we move forward. The demands of putting this all together leave little time to hop on forums so if you've got suggestions or questions (or just want to throw in more support) please feel free to contact me via email or through our fdm website. 2009 will be a banner year for disc golf and for fdm. We have the workings in place to reach heights that will surprise you. Like to see your sport featured nationwide in major retailers? Keep an eye out, it's coming.Thank you again for all of your support. Please accept our apologies for any inconveniences. To the PDGA BOD we express additional gratitude, both for your faith and confidence and for working with us to improve the long term viability of this invaluable media project. Slam the chains and keep lovin' the lid. Rich Givens"

New Poll Is Up

The new poll is now up - Do you play in local Course Challenge tournaments? I'm going to leave this poll up for a couple of days. I'm still trying to see what works best for viewers. I think a poll might be best having a few days for people to see it. So, this one will end the day before our next Course Challenge at Banklick on Saturday 11/1, which is also the finale for this years Course Challenge Series. Looks like we are going to have some pretty nice weather - sunny and 60's. Not bad for the first of November. It is also the last day of extended daylight in the evenings as we turn our clocks back Saturday night. Booo - not a halloween boo, a boo for less daylight. We will convene at Willies in Independence after the Banklick tournament Saturday for the years CC Series awards. Here's a link to the Course Challenge page.

Brief History of Disc Golf

Here's a link to a Brief History of Disc Golf by Jim Palmeri, PDGA #23. The formatting is a little rough as words are not spaced correctly but still good reading. Probably just a by-product of the new PDGA site and it's host. Check out the 9-Chain Pole Hole. So, you want to putt on this Dave Cox? Probably be some biatching about that for sure from today's players.

What Weight Drivers Do You Throw Poll Closed

So most people throw in the 170's. I was a little surprised we didn't have any max weight people or any 150 throwers at all. I guess I better stock up on 170-172g discs. Watch for new poll soon.

PDGA Definitions

Just thought I'd post a link here to some PDGA definitions for people to peruse. Nothing too much - just some plain and simple things to know if you want to get into the sport a little more or if you haven't ever thought about it. It's a quick and easy read and will probably spark a few "huh?"s from some readers.

Microtel Disc Golfer of the Year

Stan McDaniel, Microtel Disc Golfer of the Year

For any who have ever met Stan you know why he would win an award like this. It's been several years since I've seen Stan but he is truly a great person and disc golfer. It's really nice to see his dedication to the sport recognized. Congrats to Stan. Here's a link to the article on PDGA.com

Ace Story

Well, I just had to share this story with you. Had a customer in the store just now and he told of having a red Cobra that was his favorite disc and he threw it on hole #12 at Boone Woods and it went as pretty as could be into the chains and he got an ace! He was so happy he had gotten an ace and then gets down there to pull it out and what does he see? It is cracked in two pieces! Both were in the basket though. Boy, talking about going from joy to sorrow (those were his words). I thought that was a good one. Hope you enjoyed it like I did.

What's the Weight of your Drivers Poll?

Ok, today's poll is up: What's the weight of your drivers? I know you probably have some different weights in your bag for wind, tailwind, etc. but for everyday drivers what is the main weight you prefer? It's really interesting to hear what people have to say about weights. Some people say "I only throw max weight everything". Some have to have "exact weight 171g for example, not 172g and not 170g". 150 Class discs get the NO-NO answer for most males, especially between the age of 18-35. Others say I don't pay any attention to weight. I didn't put that answer up there because I really wanted to see what specific weights people have a tendency to throw.

Theoretically lighter weight discs will go further. While there is much truth in this, it is also misleading. While light discs can carry further, especially downwind, velocity and momentum are involved as well. A heavy disc, thrown at the same speed as a lighter disc, possesses more momentum. This means that it will go farther more consistantly across all conditions than a lighter disc. Also lighter weight discs can highlight poor execution and technique. Being smooth without off-axis torque is more important for lighter discs because they are more affected by air resistance and any wobble on the release will decrease the velocity of the disc more dramatically. Heavier discs require a little more torque to get the same result as a lighter disc and when you switch from heavier to lighter discs that extra effort you're used to needing sometimes translates into off axis snap. One solution is to try a little more hyzer as this forces you to pay attention to your release angle. But once you get comfortable with the speed of the pull you should be able to use very similar technique regardless of weight.

I'm not saying all this is the gospel. These are just some things I have picked up from talking to people and reading some discussion pages on the PDGA site and wanted to share some of that discussion with my readers. Any thoughts from others out there? I know there are many different ideas and thoughts. I'm just trying to give some food to the masses. Oh, gospel and food for the masses - don't read anything into that now!

What's Your Main Putter Poll Results

Well, as you can see Innova's Aviar Putter was the #1 choice, with Innova's Pro/SE Rhyno and Discraft's Banger GT coming in tied for second. The Pro/SE Rhyno may surprise some but it is definitely a favorite of a number of disc golfers in this area. I was a little surprised at the Banger GT getting as many votes as it did. I thought the Magnet or APX might get some votes, but no. Also thought the Wizard might get more than my vote. Thanks to everybody who voted. I'll have another poll up shortly. I don't know about everybody else but I like checking the polls myself.

Ace Race Packs

Just a reminder to those who didn't get the full Ace Race Pack when they played on Saturday 11/1. We have the complete packs back in. You can come in to the shop and get them whenver you want. If you let me know I can have your pack at the Banklick Course Challenge this Saturday. There are also some Ace Race packs still available at the $25 price - 2 Ace Race discs, Ace Race Supercolor Mini, and a Discraft hat = $55 value. Only a few left. Here's what Discraft has to say about the disc: It's a zippy, small-diameter midrange. Slightly overstable with great glide... think Buzzz Junior. Will hold a line in a moderate headwind, but isn't crazy overstable or too tough to handle at slow speeds or in calm conditions. I don't know about the Buzzz Jr statement, as I would think that meant it was less stable than a Buzzz. Most people I've heard say that it is between a Buzzz and a Wasp in stability. Again, I have a feeling it will be put into regular production. We'll see soon I suppose.

Early feedback on the Voodoo Putter

Well, as our Poll winds down on the main putter of choice, the newest putter on the market, the Voodoo by Gateway, is getting good reviews early on as a very straight flyer with almost no fade. Those who have tried it also like the way it fits in the hand. It does have a very nice feel in the hand to me, but I'm going to stick with the Wizard for now. I may have to try some for practice just to see how they do though. First Runs are available now. Maybe next time we have a putter poll the Voodoo will be in there.

2008 Course Challenge Series Finale @ Banklick 11/1

Another year of the GCFDA Course Challenges is about to come to a close. Seems like we were just talking about the schedule not long ago but we've played 8 course challenges thusfar and the Series Finale is Saturday 11/1/08 at Banklick Woods disc golf course. Signup by 9:30, $5 late fee after 9:30, tee at 10:00. We'll play two rounds. 18, 20, 24-hole format is still being discussed. It depends somewhat on the weather that day. If it's nice we can play more holes. If it's wet and muddy we play less holes. Daylight comes into play also. After the two rounds and that days awards are given out we head over to Willies in Independence on Rt. 17 for the yearly series awards and some good food, beverage, pool and sports on tv. Nice way to end the series. Looks like some close finishes for Series Champions in some of the divisions - check the link below.

Points: The course challenge standings are based on a player's finishes in the course challenges throughout the calendar year. Started in 2000, player's points are based upon the place that they finished in their division. For example, 1st place gets one point, fifth get five, tenth gets ten, etc. Players that did not play in a particular course challenge are awarded points equal to the maximum turnout of players in their division plus one over all course challenges in a year. This weights all tournaments the same No one is penalized more for missing one tournament over another. For example, In Advanced 24 people play Mt Airy, 10 play Pride, someone who misses Mt Airy gets 25 points, someone who misses Pride gets 25 points (2003). The two worst point totals of the year (out of the nine course challenges) are dropped from the total points for every player. The other course challenge points are tallied together to form a total score. The player with the lowest total score is the course challenge series champion in that division. (The system is roughly based on the cross country point system).

PDGA World Rankings

Here's a description of the PDGA World Rankings System - very good reading for those who want to learn more about Rankings. PDGAWorldRankingSystem2008.pdf

PDGA Player Ratings indicate how well players have been playing on their PDGA event courses. And this ratings system works all over the world. The new PDGA World Player Ranking System blends PDGA Player Ratings with finish positions in a few major events where head-to-head competition plays more of a role in the rankings. To date, just a few events bring together the top men and women from around the world in direct competition. As more sponsorship money is generated and more countries produce players at a high level, there will be more events where top players from many countries compete. As this happens, the World Rankings will shift to using more and more event results in the calculations rather than relying primarily on player ratings.
The current World Ranking calculation includes men from North America whose rating is over 999 based on at least 12 rounds in B-tier and higher events in the previous 12 months. It also includes Non-North American men with ratings over 999 based on at least 8 rounds in sanctionedevents. The top ranked man in each PDGA affiliated country regardless of rating is included only in the yearend ranking. The same process is used for women but their rating minimum is 900. Players must be current PDGA members to be included.

Putter Poll

Well, the tally is Innova 6, Discraft 3, Gateway 2, Lightning 1. So, now I'll put out a Weekend Poll for which putter from these is your main putter. I put in what I thought would be the main putters from these manufacturers. I apologize if you use one that is not on the list. I wasn't able to figure out how to put in a write-in vote. I'm still getting used to how to do this. Bear with me. If you have one not on the list, just make a comment about it here.

Virtual Toss on discgolfersr.us

Just want to let everybody know they can go to http://www.discgolfersr.us/ and throw a disc each day into the Virtual Toss. You make your throw by RSVPing to the day's Virtual Ring of Fire. Many disc golf vendors including Disc 'n Dat have put up prizes for the Jumbo Virtual Toss.

Just so happens that I was the winner yesterday. I had forgotten all about it and just happened to be on the site yesterday and threw my disc in and came out a winner. Hope you have as good of luck as I did. So go and throw! You can do this daily.

Voodoo Putter from GDS

The new putter from Gateway Disc Sports is here: Voodoo. We've got the first runs in stock 170-175g. Here's what Dave McCormack of GDS has to say about them:

The nose is a complete radius ( the wing is the exact same as the top) and there is a very small bead. Initial testing went pretty well. I found the Voodoo to be similar in stability to the Wizard when putting with the subtle fall off of hyzer at the very end of 30 and 40 foot putts. When thrown harder ( 60- 80 foot) the stability was closer to the Warlock with just the right amount of predictable fade. The biggest surprise was when I really threw them hard. They seemed to have just as much resistance to turn as a Wizard, but definitely FASTER and the fade was about a ZERO. I threw some shots of about 250-280 feet on dead ropes and the disc barely mover 2 feet one way or another the whole way.The disc feels really comfortable in the hand as the small bead is almost unnoticeable and seems to conform to your hand. I think "ergonomic grip" would fit quite well!

New Poll - Who makes your main putter?

Let's see which manufacturer makes the most of your main putters. Then we might follow up with 2-3 putter choices from the top 3-4 manufacturers as our weekend poll.

Anybody have any suggestions for future polls, just let me know.

"How Many Discs Do You Carry?" Poll Closed

Ok, it's closed and most people, 52% of you carry 11-19 discs. That's pretty much what I expected. It seems that most people, once they really get into the sport, carry over 10 discs. But the number of people with 21+ discs surprised me just a little. I know it's a small sample size but 23% of them carry 21+ discs. Hope they have a backpack strap for that bag!

Well now, what's the next poll?

Boss Blog Special

Ok, we've got a good supply of the new disc from Innova - "Boss" in stock. If you come in the store and mention the "Boss Blog Special" you'll get the Boss for $11.99. You must mention "Boss Blog Special" to get this price and it is available in-store only at time of sale. This special is thru Saturday 10/25/08. Not valid with any other special or online.

The Ace Race Packs are back in

If you didn't get your full Ace Race Pack on Saturday 10/18/08 the discs, hats and minis are in. You can come on in and pick them up. We also have a few extra packs for those who would like to purchase one - price is still $25 for 2 Discraft discs, Discraft supercolor mini and a Discraft hat. Get them before they're gone.

2008 Day-Glow Results

2008 Day-Glow Results are here. It took me a few days. Sorry for the delay.

Some Good Local Football News

Ok, so the Bengals are in the tank. Here's a local team that is doing really well and this is the first year that they have their own stadium to play in. It's not finished yet but it's getting there. Check out the Thomas More Saints It's really a fun atmosphere and some good tailgaiting too. Check them out on a Saturday afternoon.

How many of us have done this?

Little David tells a tale ...

Little David is in the 5th grade. Yesterday morning when the teacher asked the children what their fathers did for a living, all the typical answers came up: fireman, policeman, salesman, etc.
The teacher noticed that little David was being uncharacteristically quiet and so she asked him about his father.

'My father's an exotic dancer in a gay bar and takes off all his clothes in front of other men. Sometimes, if the offer's really good, he'll go out to the alley with some guy and do it with him for money.' The teacher, obviously shaken by this statement, hurriedly set the other children to work on some coloring, and took little David aside to ask him, 'Is that really true about your father?' 'No', said David, red faced. 'He plays for the Bengals but I was too embarrassed to say that in front of the other kids.'

How many discs do you carry?

Our daily poll is now up - How many discs do you carry? I carry about 15-16 most of the time. 8-9 drivers which include rollers, 5-6 midrange, 1-2 putters. Some of my midrange are also part-time putters for wind and those times when my putt goes to never-never land.

This poll will be up through 10/23/08 1:30 pm.

Needed: Disc Blog Image

I'm looking for a Disc Blog image that I can use to link from discndatonline.com and put up on my blog here. I can work out a trade for a few discs if anyone wants to send me some pics. I've got one thusfar but it just doesn't knock my socks off - ok I still had my shoes on so that may be why. But I just want to see if there is something that hits me a little better. I can't say what I'm really looking for exactly but something that just looks cool and advertises the blog. You can get as creative as you want and we'll see what comes out of it. Thanks in advance. Any questions let me know. Send the pics to discndat@fuse.net

Ace Race Packs and Extras Due in Thursday 10/23

For those who didn't get their complete Ace Race pack this past weekend we will have them back in on Thursday 10/23. We did pretty good this year. We didn't have as many "day of" signups as we had last year. I may have a few extra packs after I distribute the ones owed so if anyone still wants one let me know.

New PDGA Website Up and Running

The new PDGA website is up and running. I think they are still working through a few bugs but that is to be expected. It is a nice new crisp look. Here's the link if you want to check it out - PDGA - PDGA stands for Professional Disc Golf Association and the site has a lot of information on there about tournaments, membership, ratingsand rankings of members, rules, discussion board and more.

Daily Polls

I'm going to try and have a Daily Poll Monday thru Friday each week. Maybe Fridays will be a weekend poll. I'll see if I can come up with one each day. I will re-evaluate it each week for a while to see if i can do it. If you have any thoughts on one let me know. Vote for today's poll - Should Disc Golf be in the Olympics?

Disc Golf in the Olympics

Well, we're always saying we want more publicity for disc golf. Being in the Olympics would be great publicity. Here's a link to a petition to get disc golf in the Olympics. Easy to sign, so get to it.

I've added a Poll to see what you think about disc golf in the Olympics.

What's Hitting Metal Survey Results

Well, as you can see, the survey results are in. 17 votes, 10 for any metal, 6 for basket and above and one for chains only. I wanted to leave it up till today so people playing in the event could vote. As those who played in our Ace Race know we used the Any Metal rule. That's what we have used for the last few years, so that's what we stuck with. Anybody who wants to give some reasoning behind their vote go ahead. Like to hear some discussion. Thanks for voting.

Love to hear from you about the ARDGMG

I'd love to hear what you have to say about the days events. Please leave comments about what you liked, disliked, if you had fun, suggestions for next year or just anything you want to say. It helps when planning next years event. Yeah, gotta start thinking about it now!

Ace Race Day Glow Mini Golf Results and Summary

Wow - great day. It was a beautiful day for disc golf, sunny and 60's during the day and a little cooler at night but not bad at all. We had a great turnout of 78 people for the Ace Race and 59 for the Day-Glow. Not sure how many played the Mini Golf but I do know they all enjoyed it. The Mini Golf has become a big hit for this day and night of disc golf. We had some really good food for the cookout - chicken, hamburgers, pork chops, hot dogs, metts, baked beans, potato salad, chips, pretzels, pop and the always ever-delicious cupcakes and cookies by Patty Francis. Not sure if someone else brought some sweets or not. We finished the day off with the awards over at Gold Star which had been dead all night until we showed. So win-win again for everybody involved in the days events.

First off, the Ace Race. We had 78 participants and a great Ace Race. After two rounds we had three tied with one Ace and one Metal: Gary Thompson, Dave Parslow and Russ Foster. Jeff Eades ran the three-hole playoff and a CTP if no one got an ace or metal. After three holes they were still tied - no aces or metal in the 3 playoff holes. I had to step up before the CTP hole and see if the three players were interested - there was a Discraft bag and 10 premium Discraft discs at stake here. So the question was - did they want to make a deal between the three of them for the prize package - DEAL or NO DEAL? The answer was some blank stares and stiff faces. These guys were seriuous - NO DEAL!! Dave Parslow went first and went about 40 feet long and left. Russ Foster gets up and throws even longer. So Gary Thompson gets up and just has to lay it up to get the Discraft prize package. Gary throws and the wind takes it long - longer than Daves throw - so the Ace Race was won by Dave Parslow. Congrats to Dave.

Just a few notes from the 2 rounds: we had a total of 5 Aces. The other two besides the aforementioned, were Clint Barnes, his first Ace ever and Tony Vincent. There were two with 3 metals each: Eric Simpson and myself, Dan Bayless. There were a total of 37 metal hits on the day. Jeff Eades, the guy who has probably won more Ace pots and CTP's than anyone else in the club took 34 holes without a hint of metal, but came through with two metals on the last two holes. He just missed an Ace on the last hole to get into the playoff. It seemed to most participants that this was definitely the more stable disc of any Ace Race to this date. Most seemed to think it was somewhere between a Buzzz and a Wasp for stability. You could definitely put a little something on this disc without it turning over. All in all, I think the disc gets a yes for putting it in regular production. We'll see and we'll see what they name it if they do.

Jeff Eades once again set up a very challenging 9-hole Mini Disc Golf course around the creek by our shelter, including a mando hole. Mini Golf has definitely become a great hit for the people who come to this event. For many they have never really thrown a mini disc for anything other than just tossing it in frustration or pitching to their partner in doubles. But now you have to throw one for long drives, approaches and putt. It truly is a lot of fun and utilizes all the same skills as the full-size game. We played two rounds of 9 and had 2 players, John "Big Boy" Kuhns and Dave Marlow tied at 6 down. They played a 9-hole playoff round and Big Boy won, Dave second and Tony Vincent came in third. You may want to play in the Ace Race Day Glow Mini Golf event next year just to do this!

For the Day-Glow we had 59 participants so we had one odd man who got to be his own partner, Joe Javins. He got one extra shot per hole. Joe took definite advantage of his home course and the extra shot per hole by shooting a 40, -14 the first round. This was 3 strokes better than the next team of Fishnet Dave and Bobby Daws, who came from near Polaski County to participate in our event! In the glow second round, Russ Foster and TJ Giesling shot a 41 for a total of 88, -20 for the day, but this was just not quite enough as Joe held on shooting a 47 in the glow round for a total of 87, -21. Congrats to Joe! I'll try to get the rest of the scores up here later.

I would like to thank everybody who helped out during the day. I'll name a few but know I will forget some but here goes: Jeff Eades for helping me put on the event, setting up the Ace Race course, mini golf and the glow lights for the baskets; Liz Shooner, Dave Marlow, Paul Dumont, Fishnet Dave and Jughead for doing the cooking, Alicia Eades for the design for the Day Glow discs, Patty Francis, Kindra Burress, Hank Rodrick and whoever else did anything to help - sorry if I left off your name. I would also like to thank my beautiful wife Candy for putting up with me either working the shop on Saturdays or running tournaments on Saturdays. She also came out and helped in the morning. I love you Sweetie.

I still say that this is the most fun event I play in all year. I'm not just saying that because I run it, but I do have the most fun on this day. It's just so much fun to be out there with so many other people having fun throwing a frisbee/disc/mini all day and all night for fun, not worrying about the score as much as you do in tournaments. And no matter what you get three discs, a mini, a hat, a glow light, a cookout and some prizes for the mini and Day-Glow as well as the big prize package from Discraft for the Ace Race. You want to do good, but you're there for the fun. We have minimal prizes but we have MAXIMUM FUN!

What is Hitting Metal?

On the eve of the 2008 Ace Race it seems appropriate to post this question - what is hitting metal on your drive? Many Ace Races have been held and many people play "51" - anytime you're playing disc golf - $5 for an Ace and $1 for metal. Some people say Basket and Above Only, some Chains Only, and others Any Metal, Pole Counts. So what do you say? Anybody have any thoughts on this? You can vote in our survey to the right and you can also comment here.

Vote Early Rock Late Event on Fountain Square 10/16

Yes, there is a free event here this evening that will feature The Breeders and The National. It is a rally for Obama and a voter registration rally. I'm not suggesting you go because of the Obama rally. I'm just suggesting you go for the music. If you go for the rally, that's cool too. I'm just giving you some information. Actress Natalie Portman will be there also speaking at 7 pm.

Avoid the lines on Election Day! For registered voters of Hamilton County, charter buses will be shuttling to and from Board of Elections and the Square during the rally so participants can cast their ballot. All you need is a Driver's license or the last 4 digits of your SS number. There will be Applications for Absentee Ballots for all Ohioans that are not registered in Hamilton County.

Here's some information on the two bands.

The Breeders (perform 5:15-6:15 pm) are an American alternative rock band formed in 1988 by Kim Deal. The band's current line-up consists of Kim Deal (lead vocals and guitar), her twin sister Kelley Deal (guitar and backing vocals), Jose Medeles (drums and percussion), Mando Lopez (bass guitar) and Cheryl Lyndsey (guitar). The band has released four studio albums: Pod (1990), Last Splash (1993), Title TK (2002) and Mountain Battles (2008).

The National (perform 7:20 pm) are a band of New Yorkers transplanted from Ohio. They are Matt Berninger, Aaron Dessner, Bryce Dessner, Bryan Devendorf, and Scott Devendorf. Since their time together began in 1999, they have released four critically acclaimed albums worldwide, and have been written about and celebrated by countless press outlets, in addition to having performed on The Late Show With David Letterman. Their last album, Boxer was named album of the year by numerous outlets and it landed them on the cover of Paste Magazine's 2007 year-end issue.

Day Glow Discs Are In!

And do they look great! Jeff Eades daughter Alicia produced the artwork. You have the moon over the fort at Boone with spooky trees and spooky basket. You'll be glad to get one of these. We have the design on Z-Buzzz, ESP Force, ESP Avenger SS and Pro D Challengers. You'll get one with your entry fee along with a glow light and cookout. We will also have mini golf during the cookout. Let us know what you think of the design. I'd like to get some feedback to Jeff and Alicia. Also, don't forget, you can still sign up for the Ace Race or the Day Glow at Disc 'n Dat in Florence or online at Disc 'n Dat
This is so much fun! Tell all your friends and family and make it a family affair.

Champion Boss Update

The Champion Boss has gotten pretty good reviews thus far. Most of the Star Stamped First Runs were 173-175g. Some of the CFR ones were in lighter weights. I haven't seen any of the light weight ones. If anyone has thrown or seen them thrown, please give your review here.

The Boss is definitely a verrry fassst disc - hence, its 13 speed rating. It does not appear to me or from other reviews I've heard that it is as overstable as either the Xcaliber or the Destroyer. It seems to not be as squirrely as the Destroyer has a tendency to be. The Boss is replacing some Destroyers - STAR, Pro and Champion, apparently, in some people's bags. Also, it seems Dave Feldberg is throwing them and liking them.

Again, anyone who has thrown them or has some info they want to share, please do so. I'd like to hear it and I'm sure others would too.

Ace Race Day Glow Update

We currently have 45 signed up for the Ace Race and 35 signed up for the Day Glow. We can take registrations for both up to the day of the event. I've ordered more Ace Race packs and they will be here by Ace Race time. Day Glow discs will be in soon. If you want to save the $5 late fee for Day Glow you'll need to sign up by Wednesday 10/15. After that it will be $30. Have questions, e-mail me at discndat@fuse.net or call 859.371.3668

GCFDA Club Meeting Tonight at 7 p.m.

The next club meeting will be this evening, October 13th at Florence Y'all Gyro's & Wings - 7651 Mall Rd in Florence 7:00pm. It's located next door to Mr. Chuck E. Cheese.

Club meetings are held every two months on the second Monday of the month. Meetings are open to anyone interested in the local disc golf scene and the club. You must be a current member to vote on any issues or proposals. We discuss new courses, course management, tournaments, fundraisers, events and just general stuff about disc golf in the area. So, if you're interested in getting involved or just learning more about the club or disc golf in general, show up. Everybody's welcome. See you there.

AJ Jolly Course Challenge was a blast!

Wow, what a beautiful day for the AJ Jolly course challenge event. Couldn't ask for any better weather and the colors of the trees as well as the wildlife there made for a great tourney. I got there around 7:15 and the fog was just coming off the lake and I saw a blue heron by hole two's tee. Saw the blue herons several more times that day. We had 65 people participate. Jeff Madden hit the Ace Fund - I can't remember what was in it but around $100 I believe. You can get the full results at cincinnatidiscgolf.com I stuck around for doubles and redeemed myself for the collapse I had at the end of my second round.

I enjoyed the day there so much that Candy (my wife) and I went back down on Sunday and spent the day there hiking and enjoying the scenery and wildlife. We saw the herons again. Liz, we did see two of them together Sunday. I know this is sacrilege to most disc golfers but I didn't even throw any discs while we were there on Sunday. I also didn't watch the Bengals game. AJ truly is a beautiful setting, especially in the fall.

If anyone has any comments about the tournament, course or the park in general, shoot 'em out here.

Division Definitions

I just thought I'd write a little bit about the division definitions that we offer in the course challenges as mentioned in my previous post as they can get a little confusing and often are referred to with mutltiple names. We essentially use a scaled down version of the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) divisions with the exception you must be age 12 or older to participate in our Course Challenges.

Open generally refers to open to any person regardless of age. However, there is the one exception for our course challenges (you must be 12 or older) as noted above. Open is also referred to as Pro division. So you can have the Open Men, Open Women, Open Masters and Open Grandmasters, all of which mean Pro divisions.

Masters are players who are aged 40 and over with DOB during the calendar year. So you could play Masters in the AJ Jolly Course Challenge tomorrow if your DOB is 12/31/68. Again Open Masters is also referred to as Pro or Open Masters.

Grandmasters are players who are aged 50 and over with DOB during the calendar year. You could play in the Course Challenge if your DOB was 12/31/58. AKA Pro or Open Grandmasters.

Advanced Amateurs are players who have advanced disc golf skills but not quite ready to participate in the Open/Pro divisions. You have Advanced Amateur Men, Women, Masters, and Grandmasters divisons.

Novice players are those players who are beginners or others whose skill levels may not be ready for more advanced play. If you haven't participated in an organized event previously, we usually suggest you start here and then you can see where your skill level is compared to other scores that day. However, you are welcome to compete in any division.

We also offer Junior divisions for those between the ages of 12-16, however, they often participate and are welcome to participate in higher divisions, if they choose.

Well, I said it can be confusing, didn't I? I hope I was able to explain it somewhat but I'm sure there may be questions, so just let me know if you do. Also, if anyone sees a mistake or wants to clarify something, by all means do so. I'm not a guru, I'm just wanting to disperse some information.

One last thing, I think many people think that just because we play in tournaments that we are so much better than them - and there are those that are playing in tournaments who think they are better than they are! What I'm trying to say is many people who are recreational disc golfers who haven't participated in an organized event can be just as good as any of those who do. So don't be put off by it being a tournament. Just come out and have fun!

AJ Jolly Course Challenge Saturday 10/11/08

Wow, the weather couldn't be any better for the next to last Course Challenge at AJ Jolly on Saturday 10/11/08. This tournament is the monthly event put on by the Greater Cincinnati Flying Disc Association (GCFDA) aka cincinnatidiscgolf.com The tournament is open to all levels of players, from the beginner to the pro.

Divisions: There are varying divisions for individual skill levels, including Open Men, Open Women, Open Masters (40+ yrs old), Grandmasters (50+ yrs old) , Advanced Men, Advanced Women, and Novice.

Cost: Each individual tournament costs $20 for the Open Division, $10 for Masters, Grandmasters, Open Women, Advanced, Advanced Masters, and $5 for all other divisions. There is a $2 non-member fee for all non-GCFDA members (Novice Men & Am Women are exempt from the non-member fee), and a $5 late fee for sign-ups after 9:30am. There is also an optional $2 ace fund. If no aces are hit that day, a CTP will be run for half the fund and the other half will be carried over to the next tournament.

Prizes: Prizes and cash are awarded based on pre-made chart.

So come on out and join us. You don't have to be good to have fun! If you have any questions call me (Dan) at 859.371.3668

Ace Race Update!

Don't worry if you haven't signed up yet. We will be able to take signups up to the start of the event. I've got Ace Race packs in now and will order more next week if I need to so I can have them the day of the event. Again, if we get a tremendous signup the day of the event, some of us may have to give up a disc that day to some of the newcomers. I'll order more packs after that and everyone will be assured to get a complete Ace Race pack which as usual, is a great deal: 2 newly produced (just for this Ace Race) Discraft discs, a Supercolor Mini Ultra Star (I think this years is really a nice one) and a Discraft Hat. It's an awesome deal just there - that's a $55 value in itself. So tell all your friends and family about the fun they can have at the Ace Race.

2008 Ace Race Day Glow and Mini Golf

Matt Blakely sponsored by Discraft and Disc 'n Dat finished 48th at the 2008 USDGC. This is the second year in a row Matt has finished in the top 50 and the 4th time out of 6 appearances. Congratulations to Matt on his fine disc golf play and his very fine representation of Disc 'n Dat. We are proud to have him represent us in the disc golf community.

2008 USDGC Champion - Nate Doss

Congratulations to National Champion Nate Doss - Two-time disc golf World Champion Nate Doss of California has added the United States national trophy to his mantle after a four-throw victory at the USDGC. Doss made only five bogeys through four rounds, and was bogey free in round two when he tied the Winthrop Gold course record with a 13-under-par 55. Well done Champ!

Borrowing ideas from the traditional game of golf, Harold Duvall and Jonathan Poole began planning an event that would quickly shape the future of disc golf’s competitive scene. From those plans has grown the United States Disc Golf Championship. Through its unique structure, highly acclaimed course, and distinct qualifying procedure, the US Championship has successfully established itself as one of disc golf’s most prestigious events.
In an effort to bring best disc golfers together, the US Championship combines all players who qualify into a single division. Virtually every other disc golf tournament offers divisions based on age, gender and skill level. Disc golfers love the relaxed tournament structure, as the can enjoy good food, music, and even watch other competitors play their rounds.
